It helps reduce the spread of infectious diseases among residents, clients, workers, visitors, and families.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No single action can prevent every exposure. Safer workplaces use several measures together, including risk assessment, workplace controls, hand hygiene, vaccination, cleaning and disinfection, safe sharps handling, personal protective equipment, training, reporting, and clear procedures.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Use current guidance.<\/strong> Follow your workplace procedures and any direction from your local health authority, the BC Centre for Disease Control, or public health. Infection-control measures may change during periods of increased risk or an outbreak.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What infection prevention and control helps do&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>protect residents, clients, workers, visitors, and families&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>reduce workplace exposure and the spread of communicable diseases&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>prevent or limit outbreaks&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>reduce the risk of serious illness for people who are more vulnerable&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>support safe care and a healthy workplace&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>help employers meet occupational health and safety requirements&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How infections can spread at work<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Infectious diseases can spread in different ways. The controls you need depend on the infectious agent, the task, the care setting, and how exposure could happen.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Respiratory spread: through respiratory particles produced when a person breathes, speaks, coughs, or sneezes.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Direct contact: through contact with a person, blood, body fluids, respiratory secretions, or other infectious material.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Indirect contact: through contaminated equipment, shared objects, or surfaces.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sharps injuries: through a puncture or cut from a contaminated needle or other sharp item.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Routine practices apply to every resident or client interaction. Additional precautions may be needed when a specific infection is suspected or confirmed, or when the point-of-care risk assessment identifies a higher risk.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Infection prevention is a shared responsibility&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Workers bring training, experience, and moment-to-moment judgement to each interaction. Employers are responsible for assessing workplace risks and providing the systems workers need to work safely. These include suitable controls, safe work procedures, supplies, equipment, education, supervision, and a clear way to report concerns and exposures.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Safety is not an individual task.<\/strong> Workers should not be expected to manage an infectious-disease risk without the information, time, equipment, staffing, training, and support needed to follow workplace procedures.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Start with the hierarchy of controls<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hierarchy of controls helps workplaces choose ways to eliminate or reduce exposure. Start with the most effective controls that are reasonably possible, then use several controls together. Personal protective equipment is an important layer, but it should not be the only layer.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Elimination<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>Remove the exposure when possible. Examples may include delaying a non-urgent home visit when someone is ill, using a virtual check-in when appropriate, or asking workers and visitors not to enter a care home when they are sick.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Substitution<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>Replace an item or process with a safer option. Examples may include using single-use items when appropriate, choosing products suitable for the cleaning task, or replacing damaged equipment that cannot be cleaned properly.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Engineering controls<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>Change the environment to separate people from the hazard. Examples may include ventilation, physical separation, safety-engineered sharps, and well-placed handwashing or alcohol-based hand rub stations.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Administrative controls<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>Change how work is organized. Examples include screening, exposure control plans, safe work procedures, training, staffing or cohorting practices, cleaning schedules, and systems for reporting and follow-up.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Personal protective equipment<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>Use PPE selected for the task and risk. It helps you consider the person in care, the environment, the task, and yourself. Use it to decide whether it is safe to proceed and which controls or PPE you need.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Questions to ask before care<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Does the resident or client have symptoms that may be linked to an infection, such as coughing, sneezing, fever, vomiting, or diarrhea?&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Has an infection been suspected or confirmed? Are additional precautions in place?&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What contact will the task involve? Could I be exposed to blood, body fluids, respiratory secretions, or contaminated material?&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Can the resident or client follow instructions or respiratory etiquette?&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Is the room, home, equipment, or immediate work area visibly soiled or difficult to clean?&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do I have the right supplies, equipment, and support to complete the task safely?&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What PPE is required? Do I know how to put it on, use it, remove it, and dispose of or reprocess it safely?&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If the task is not safe, pause when you can.<\/strong> Follow workplace procedures, get help, use additional controls, and report the hazard. Follow your workplace hand hygiene procedure. Clean your hands before and after caring for someone who is sick, after coughing or sneezing, after using or helping someone use the washroom, and after handling shared objects. Health care workers should also follow the hand hygiene moments and practices set by their workplace.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use soap and water when hands are visibly dirty or when your workplace procedure requires it.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When alcohol-based hand rub is appropriate, use an approved product and rub your hands until dry.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Clean your hands after removing PPE. Vaccines can help protect against severe illness from respiratory viruses that spread most often during fall and winter. Follow current provincial recommendations and your workplace requirements for influenza, COVID-19, and any other vaccines recommended for your role or personal health needs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use the Get Vaccinated system or speak with a health care provider, pharmacist, or public health unit for current eligibility and timing.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keep your immunization record current and follow your workplace process for providing records when required.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Vaccination does not replace hand hygiene, risk assessment, staying home when sick, or other workplace controls.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bccdc.ca\/health-info\/diseases-conditions\/seasonal-respiratory\/getting-vaccinated\">Check current BCCDC respiratory illness vaccination information \u203a<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Clean and disinfect safely&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Follow your workplace cleaning schedule and safe work procedures. Clean and disinfect shared equipment and high-touch surfaces using products that are suitable for the task. An infection can move through a home quickly if several layers of control are not in place.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use screening, signage, and visitor guidance that reflect current public health and workplace direction.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Support workers and visitors to stay away when ill, according to current guidance.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keep hand hygiene stations stocked and easy to reach.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Clean and disinfect shared equipment between residents and increase attention to high-touch areas when risk is elevated.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use room placement, physical separation, dedicated equipment, staffing approaches, or cohorting when directed and appropriate.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Follow outbreak guidance from public health, BCCDC, the local health authority, and the workplace infection-control team.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Home and community health&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In home and community health, the workplace changes from visit to visit. Workers may have less control over ventilation, space, household members, pets, cleaning supplies, and the home's condition. Planning before arrival is an important control.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ask before the visit whether the client or anyone in the home has symptoms, when this is part of workplace procedure.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use virtual care or reschedule non-urgent work when appropriate and permitted by the care plan and workplace process.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Carry the supplies and PPE needed for the planned task and possible changes in risk.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Complete a point of care risk assessment at the door and again if conditions change.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Choose a clean area for supplies and prevent clean items from contacting used equipment or contaminated surfaces.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Follow workplace procedures for transporting, cleaning, disinfecting, or disposing of equipment and waste after the visit.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Contact a supervisor when the environment, household illness, missing supplies, or another condition makes the visit unsafe.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Exposure control plans: actions for employers and leaders&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under section 6.34 of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation, an employer must develop and implement an exposure control plan when a worker has or may have occupational exposure to a biological agent. The plan must be based on a workplace risk assessment and developed using the precautionary principle.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A plan is useful only when workers understand it and can follow it in real working conditions.
