I probably know 120 residents.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Buddy Delena, a dietary aide at Eden Gardens, does more than deliver food\u2014he brings joy and connection to the Nanaimo care home\u2019s residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe serve food, but we also talk with them and ask what they want,\u201d Buddy says. He\u2019s learned to recognize each resident\u2019s preferences. \u201cIt\u2019s just memorization.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Buddy is known for his sense of humour. One of his favourite moments involves joking with a resident who is gluten-free. \u201cEvery time I serve her food, I joke that it\u2019s full of gluten,\u201d he laughs. \u201cShe knows it\u2019s not\u2014she just laughs with me. She\u2019s a funny girl.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Working closely with residents allows Buddy to contribute meaningfully to the care team. If he notices a resident having difficulty swallowing or not acting like themselves, he communicates with the food service manager right away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Buddy, the most rewarding part of the job is simple: being appreciated. \u201cWhen you serve their food and they say thank you, it feels good. One resident said, \u2018You served me good food today.\u2019 That means a lot to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been here six years.
