While we are grateful that there have been very few worker deaths in the long-term and continuing care sector, it's crucial to acknowledge that many workers experience life-altering injuries that can lead to extended absences from work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Care aides and long-term care workers have physically demanding jobs that involve lifting and moving residents and using medical equipment. Workers who perform these duties are subjected to a range of risks, which may eventually lead to more severe conditions and injuries, including sprains and strains.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To tackle workplace injuries, it's crucial to emphasize resources that help maintain workplaces safe and promote functional safety committees \u2013 we offer various tools to help with this:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We have guides on safe handling and resources like the <a href=\"https:\/\/scbcdev.safecarebc.ca\/training\/elearning\/provincial-violence-prevention-curriculum-refresher-and-toolkit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Provincial Violence Prevention C<\/a>urriculum\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/scbcdev.safecarebc.ca\/topics\/joint-health-safety-committee\/tips-and-ideas-for-your-safety-committee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Safety Committee tips and tricks<\/a>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/scbcdev.safecarebc.ca\/topic-showcase\/month-of-safety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\"12 Months of Safety\"<\/a> gives practical advice for staying safe all year round.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.safecarebclearningspace.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Learning Space<\/a> has courses to teach you how to deal with workplace hazards.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even though safety is a top concern, workers still experience frequent injuries. However, there are proactive steps we can take to prevent workplace injuries and create a safer environment:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"1\">\n<li><strong>Thorough training:<\/strong> Teach proper lifting techniques, infection control measures, and ergonomic practices.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Safe patient handling policies:<\/strong> Set clear protocols for safe patient handling, including using assistive devices and teamwork.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>Regular risk assessments:<\/strong> Conduct frequent assessments to identify workplace hazards like slippery floors or poor lighting.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"4\">\n<li><strong>Advocating for mental health: <\/strong>Acknowledge the emotional toll of caregiving and offer access to mental health.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"5\">\n<li><strong>Open communication:<\/strong> Encourage workers to report safety problems without fear of repercussions.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the National Day of Mourning, we can take a moment to renew our commitment to creating safer workplaces for everyone.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By using these resources, adopting best practices, and prioritizing worker well-being, we can strive towards a future where workplace injuries and deaths are uncommon.
