Then, using the handout as a guide, discuss how care staff could respond if they were in Kamal\u2019s position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">After this huddle staff should be able to:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Understand why visitors may experience different emotions as restrictions are lifted.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be able to respond appropriately if confronted by visitors who are experiencing intense emotions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scenario<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alex has just arrived for a visit with his mother. He has been visiting regularly and complying with infection prevention measures such as masking and rapid testing prior to his visits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The greeter, Kamal, informs Alex that visitors are no longer required to wear a mask and will not be asked for proof of vaccination. Alex is shocked and concerned about the safety of himself and his mother. He asks <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kamal if anyone can come into the care home. Kamal responds \u201cThat\u2019s correct. A visitor does not have to provide proof of vaccination or do a rapid test.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alex starts shouting at Kamal \u201cI can\u2019t believe you are not protecting the seniors living in this care home! How are you going to make sure that my mom doesn\u2019t get sick if no-one has to be vaccinated or wear a mask?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Guiding questions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What might be causing Alex\u2019s emotional reaction?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How would you respond if you were in Kamal\u2019s position?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What strategies could you use to di\u001fuse the situation?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What policies are in place to promote respectful communication?
